About

TheVisionAndTheVersion

The VisualLMR tools are not-for-profit -- we don't make a dime, and don't want to. There are no fees to use VisualLMR platform and there is no revenue stream ( e.g., from advertising ) into the VisualLMR platform.

So what's in it for us? Not a whole lot, except the pure pleasure of using open source platforms to provide something for free, where others charge for (1) less visual, (2) often clunky, (3) overpriced, web-based land-mobile spectrum planning tools.

Hell, we even provide an easy-to-use batch submission tool for HAAT, DHAAT, ShortSpacing, ContourAnalysis, and CoverageAnalysis -- who else does that? And there is more..., M2M/A2M WebServices where SOAP (v. 1.2) clients can access ViusalLMR servcies programatically -- who else does that, for free?

One last nugget, also provided is a database that is the WhitePages for Public Safety and Commercial land mobile licensees. It provides information about all LMR licensee call signs, operating emission masks, a guess about the type of system they are operating, contact (phone, fax, email, USPS) information, and much more. This database is updated monthly, usually near the beginning of the month.

Platform

The VisualLMR tools have been developed on the Microsoft .Net framework and are written in C#, C++, JavaScript, and SQL using VisualStudio 2010, Eclipse, and the GNU gcc/g++ toolsets; The website, webservices, and databases run on Win-7P (x64/i7) and Ubuntu Linux (x64/i5).

The VisualLMR platform utilizes binary images from the following open-source platform(s):

  • GoogleMap Control a .Net library that wraps the GoogleMap javascript controls as an Asp.Net webform control.
  • GDAL a .Net library used to extract elevation data from the USGS NED 1-arcsecond, 3-arcsecond datasets; as well as the NASA SRTM datasets.
  • MySql an open-source relational database management system (RDBMS).
  • ImageMagick a .Net library that is used to create and transform popular graphic file image formats.
  • GraphicsMagick a .Net library that is used to create and transform popular graphic file image formats.
  • USGS NED 1-arcsecond and 3-arcsecond datasets that provide elevation data.
  • NASA SRTM V2 1-arcsecond dataset that provide elevation data acquired by radar.
  • FCC ULS databases application and license information for assets related to a filenumber and/or a call sign.
  • The VisualLMR platform utilizes source code images from the following open-source platform(s):

  • SPLAT/ITM and the SPLAT/Server Irregular Terrain Model ( Longley-Rice ) used to estimate/predict area coverage maps.
  • Since many of the VisualLMR tools serve to determine USA/FCC rule compliance, only location/elevation information in the CONUS, AK, HI and US Territories is provided. Elevations outside the CONUS, AK, HI, and US Territories will be calculated as zero (0).

    TermsOfUse -- TheBoilerPlate

THE SOFTWARE IS PROVIDED "AS IS", WITHOUT WARRANTY OF ANY KIND, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO THE WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE AND NONINFRINGEMENT. IN NO EVENT SHALL THE AUTHORS OR COPYRIGHT HOLDERS BE LIABLE FOR ANY CLAIM, DAMAGES OR OTHER LIABILITY, WHETHER IN AN ACTION OF CONTRACT, TORT OR OTHERWISE, ARISING FROM, OUT OF OR IN CONNECTION WITH THE SOFTWARE OR THE USE OR OTHER DEALINGS IN THE SOFTWARE.

Plain and simple, use at your own risk.

    Privacy

You don't need a user account to use the VisualToolSet or the BatchToolSet. So we don't know who you are or what is your email address.

What do we track? Every session with this website logs the originating IP (v4) address. We also install a "cookie" on in your web browser's environment ( if allowed ), and this allows us to track how often you visit and your usage profile. You can delete the cookie at any time, and we won't even notice -- you will, however, be treated as a "new" visitor when you delete all of the VisualLMR cookies.

For those of you using the BatchSubmissionTool, when you upload a spreadsheet/workbook for batch processing, it will be stored on our server(s) - there is no way around that. So, obviously, don't place any confidential or private information in the uploaded batch submission file. These files remain private in that they are not visible to VisualLMR users, except the user providing the submission.

All pages include a link to RevolverMaps.Com, which when resolved, will log your IP address and then guess its approximate geographic location. This cool widget will allow us to display a map of past and current vistors to VisualLMR. See GlobalUsage below.

    Security

Although we virus-scan the binary images (e.g., the LMR WhitePages database, ECMA/Java-Scripts, et. al.) before posting them; you should consider doing the same after downloading them to insure confidence.

    CaveatEmptor

There are a few things that commercial companies, who charge fees for services and the use of their web-based tools, have over this free website:

    • They provide technical support for their products -- sometimes in a timely manner.
    • They eventually provide bug-fixes for reported and verified problems.
    • Their tools have exotic features (of which, however, >90% of their exotics are used <10% of the time)
    • A few guarantee some sort of SLA.
    • They have a real phone number, which they sometimes answer.

We will try to do our best.

    Performance

The front page ( http://Www.VisualLmr.Com ) has a status box which will be green [ all-is-good, proceed ] or red [ something-is-not-working; too much traffic, starved for resources, a necessary sub-system ( e.g., database, webservices ) crashed, etc. -- please try again later ].

This is software, and software has bugs -- we're no different than anyone else. So if you see an issue, and desire to report it, we will attempt to address it as time allows.

Many of the tools on this website have been tested against the results produced from multiple commercial LMR software platforms ( namely public engineering studies submitted to the FCC ) and largely produce similar results. When results differ, e.g., 47 CFR 90.621 VisualShortSpacing analysis, the differences were found to be in the accuracy of the elevation data that was used. FYI, this platform uses the USGS 1-arcsecond DEM (tile accuracy to ~30 m).

    IP Blocking

IP address, as translated by Ip-Api.Com, that map to any of the following country codes:

AF, AM, BR, BD, CN, CO, CU, GE, GH, HK, IN, IQ, IL, KE, KG, LA, LV, LB, LY, MO, NL, KP, PK, RO, RU, RW, SA, RS, SL, SK, SI, SO, SY, TH, UA, UY, VE, VN, YE, ZM, ZW

will be blocked from using VisualLMR. On blocking, a redirect to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cyber_terrorism will be issued.

Country code "LAN" represents a pseudo-country code for Reserved IP Addresses or an IP address that could not be translated.

Why are IP addresses, originating in these countries blocked? More often than not, Internet traffic originating in these countries has been shown to be a hostile cyberterrorism threat -- waging a silent war on US Internet properties. VisualLMR is of no real use to those outside the US, so we elect to defer service.
